How To Make Advanced Tie Dye Designs

glass 407

When it comes to tie dyes, there is a wide variety of designs you can choose from. Whether you want to go simple or advanced, Outer Banks tie dye can help you out. We want to give you a brief introduction on how a few different design patterns are made. This way you can see what’s going on before you do it, and don’t forget that most of these steps we do for you!

Shadow Dying:

  1. Prepare your dye bath.
  2. Soak your T-shirt in the bath for about two minutes, stirring.
  3. Lift the T-shirt out of the dye bath so about 2/3 of the shirt is still in the bath. Gently move the shirt back and forth for five to ten minutes.
  4. Life the T-shirt out of the back until about 1/3 of the shirt is still submerged. Move back and forth for five to the minutes and remove.
  5. Rinse T-shirt in cold water, letting the water flow from the lightest dyed part down, until the water runs clear.
  6. Wash in warm water and towel dry.

One-color, Two-way Striped:

  1. Fold the shirt like an accordion, then fold in half.
  2. Band tightly with rubber bands every two inches.
  3. Prepare your dye bath.
  4. Soak shirt in the dye bath for about four to ten minutes, stirring.
  5. Remove shirt, rinse with cold water.
  6. Remove bands.
  7. Starting from the opposite side, fold like in step one, repeat step 2.
  8. Soak shirt in the same color for another four to ten minutes.
  9. Remove the shirt, rinse with cold water.
  10. Remove the bands again.
  11. Wash in warm water and towel dry.

Two Colored Marble:

  1. Crunch T-shirt into a ball, then stretch rubber bands around it in a criss-cross pattern.
  2. Prepare your dye bath.
  3. Soak the ball in the dye bath, stirring for four to fifteen minutes, or until the color is darker than you want.
  4. Remove T-shirt and rinse in cold running water.
  5. Remove rubber bands and rinse again.
  6. Re-tie like in step one, ticking some of the colored sections into the bundle.
  7. Repeat step three in a darker color.
  8. Rinse in cold water.
  9. Remove ties and rinse again.
  10. Wash in warm water and towel dry.
